Yea, it's true that designers hate to hear someone tell them to make a design "POP". I mean, because really what does that even mean? Not even the client usually knows what it means.
But I've figured it out. POP is just the certain "je ne sais quoi" that makes a design the most functionally cohesive and visually appealing. The thing that makes it catch someone's eye and keep them looking.
Although I use a number of different apps and platforms to get the most effective design for my clients, its also possible to create Canva designs that also pop.
First let's talk about what is NOT working....
Here are 4 main reasons why your canva designs aren't having the impact you desired.
You are using too many different or competing font styles (number one design killer)
You are not properly balancing your colors. Color theory is a real thing! Even if you can't do a whole study on this, it's important to understand the basics of what colors work well together and which do not.
Your visual hierarchy is all off. The most important element needs to be the main focus, then the next important thing , and so on... Not incorporating this can leave the people looking at your flyer confused or worse, completely uninterested.
(Some of us) are not using high quality or professional images. Please try to avoid selfies in ANY type of marketing piece, unless the marketing is literally about taking selfies.
Here are 4 things you can do to add POP to your designs:
Establish a Clear Visual Hierarchy
Use size, color, and contrast to guide the viewer’s eye to the most important elements first. Proper hierarchy ensures that the viewer knows where to look and in what order, making the design intuitive and engaging.
Choose a Harmonious Color Palette
Select colors that complement each other and reflect the tone and purpose of your design. A well-chosen color palette can evoke the desired emotions and create a cohesive look.
Utilize Whitespace
Give elements room to breathe by incorporating ample whitespace around them. Whitespace helps reduce clutter, improves readability, and enhances the overall aesthetic of the design.
Incorporate Appropriate Contrast
Use contrast to highlight important elements and create visual interest. High contrast between elements ensures they stand out and capture attention, making the design more dynamic and engaging. And you can contrast any 2 versions of the same element. Like contrasting colors, contrasting textures and even contrasting text.
I know this may be a lot of information to take in, and it might even feel a bit overwhelming at first. But remember, it’s the small changes that can make a big difference in creating a visually cohesive and dynamic design that truly pops. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills, these tips will help elevate your designs to the next level.
